Notebook Hard Drive Dilema?

Hi, I’m thinking about ordering a notebook this week so that I can use it in college. I have a pretty good idea of what type of hardware I will be getting. However, I can’t decide on the hard drive. I really want to get a 7200rpm hard drive since those are faster (and allow video editing programs to run a lot faster). However, a lot of manufacturers don’t allow you to get 7200rpm hard drives. My options are HP, Dell, and IBM. Dell is the only one that allows you to get a 7200rpm hard drive in a 15.4 inch laptop. However, those are extremely overpriced. I check hp’s site, but they only allow you to get a 7200rpm hard drive with their bulky 17 inch laptops. What is my best option?

In most cases the reason why the faster hard drives are in the bigger machines are, they produce more heat and need more cooling. The larger systems are setup for the extra cooling… remember they warranty their product.
By switching out the hard drive yourself will void your warranty in most cases.
If you do switch it out, know what hard drive is in there first, ide or sata and buy the appropriate one (suggest Newegg.com).
What you want to do is to clone your new hard drive before installing it and setting it away in a safe place. That way, if you have to send the computer in for warranty repair, you can drop the original drive back in the laptop.
I suggest the buying the IBM. Us repair techs consider HP laptops to be trash and Dells not far behind.

I would go with the HP, don’t get any upgrade on the Hard drive, before you get it, buy a new hard drive at 7200 rpm, once you get the laptop, switch it out and presto, you would have saved atleast $50-$100 bucks, and if you sell the extra hard drive at like $30-$50 you would save more.

in your sittuation i would go with the hp… buts thats becasue i love hp monitors… hp is just a genaric brand where they take other companise parts put it all together and say “hey look we made and awesome computer that looks cool” but if you have the extra cash go with an alian ware you can get a 15in with a huge 1TB HHD for 1500 or a awesome 1TB 17in for 1400 they have great displays P.S. if you get a alian ware (which are considerd the best brand of laptop and make every little part of there pcs and laptops) do not pay 350 bucks for 4gb of ram and do not get ram installed at bestbuy learn who to do it your self or get a freind to do it (that knows what there doing!) if you touch basicly any part of the ram that ist the edge its probaly fried. http://www.alienware.com/products/notebo...
